SS Republic Confederate Silver is here
|
** From the wreck of paddlewheeler S.S. Republic (lost October 25, 1865 off the Georgia coast)
US22. US Double Eagle ($20) 1857 S Variety 20G (rare). NGC AU 58 CAC. A lustrous, very clean, mint state coin, as CAC agrees, which NGC decided to call an AU58. Noticeably prooflike fields, especially on the reverse, which NGC also failed to call. While the 1857 S $20 is a common date from the Central America (lost in 1857), it is a distinctly uncommon date from the Republic (lost in 1865). In fact the NGC census of $20 gold from the Republic published a few years ago recorded no 1857 S $20. A final census is still not published, but the word from the Odyssey salvors is that "very few" 1857 S $20 were recovered from the Republic.
The only other SS Central America era San Francisco $20 recovered from the Republic is the 1855 S $20. Collectors who would like to own examples of the 1855 S and 1857 S from both shipwrecks might not want to pass on this opportunity to a 1857 S from the SS Republic.
